Handmade Ceramic Flowers ‘Poppies’ by Renee Kilburn

Within Renee’s handmade ceramic flowers collection, we have these enduring Poppies!

In 2018, Renee took on an amazing task,  asked by RHS Garden Rosemoor to create an installation of 100 Poppies in Commemoration of the end of WW1 in 1918.   Displayed around an Unknown Soldier sculpture between July and November 2018, they were a prominent feature.

Renee raised £1700 for the Poppy Appeal.

The strong, vibrant red ensures these poppies stand out.  A beautiful flower that never disappoints.

N.B. These handmade ceramic flowers are available to purchase as a bouquet of three. Please contact us if you would like more than 3 blooms. Each additional poppy is £50.

Handmade Ceramic Flowers Artist

Originally from Gothenburg, Sweden, Renee Kilburn, came to England in 1994.   Accepted to study Ceramic Design at Central Saint Martin’s College of Design and Technology, Renee lived in London.  It was during her second year that Renee’s view of ceramics changed forever.  An opportunity to not only meet but to work with Kate Malone opened Renee’s eyes to the world of wonderful ceramic creations.

With her heightened awareness of the beautiful natural world within which we live, Renee set about her her work with a new sense of colour, shape and movement.   Through the years Renee has developed her own unique way of decorating fired clay.  Giving normally brown stoneware a sense of movement, as well as a brilliantly clear and flowing colourful glaze.

Renee chooses to work with Scrava Earthstone ES40 Hand Building Clay.  Allowing a freedom to work with the coiling and slab and sprig technique she has developed, eliminating the fear of cracking and warping.  Moreover this gives Renee the freedom to be as spontaneous as she feels.

After the bisque firing, a white stoneware glaze is applied, the piece is fired again and then an earthenware glaze is painted on top.  A final firing presents a highly fired body with resulting vibrant flowing colours.

Renee now settled in settled in Weston-Super-Mare, where she works in her own studio.   It is here that she creates her unique frost proof work.  As a result Renee’s delightful pieces can be enjoyed within the home or to enhance a garden area.

Renee’s work has collector’s from across the world.
