Decorative Glass Plate – Artist
Charles Sharpe has always admired glass, its vibrancy and tone. Having been a collector of glass himself, it was only natural that he would become a glass artist. With the onset of rheumatoid arthritis, Charles could no longer work as a woodturner, and it was then that he began to follow his love of glass.
With a career as a carpenter and joiner, Charles has been able to use his acquired skills of precision cutting to make uniquely patterned pieces of glass. Using unusual construction methods, he is able to create a piece that is simultaneously very controlled and excitingly innovative.
Inspired by the highly coloured textiles of Kaffe Fassett, Zaha Hadid’s contemporary architecture and the landscape photographs of Charles Waite. Charles works with a magnitude of glass fragments to create a fused glass piece that is highly individual, still retaining the attraction and fascination of all that is glass.
Fine-tuning his skills with the tuition from an accomplished glass artist, Charles is establishing his own style of work. He gains great pleasure from planning and cutting segmented glass pieces. Embracing the challenge of colour proportions and placement to achieve the planned vision. Recently, Charles has started to texture his work with beads and plaster to create matt effects which accent his designs.
Based in Norfolk, Charles’s work has gone to collections in France and Germany. He is a regular exhibitor in East Anglia.
