Nature’s Platter

Handmade Glass Platters by Michelle Atkinson

These stunning handmade glass platters are created using recycled art glass.  Generating new life from off-cuts of other projects. Complimentary chunks of glass are melted through a suspended metal screen, allowing the various colours to swirl together and form a one-of-a-kind slab of patterned glass.  Michelle makes the moulds based on elements found throughout the Western Canadian landscape (Alberta stone, tree bark, and various grasses).  Circular tiles made from tree bark are ‘pressed’ into the glass, to leave an impression of natural wood.  The matte silky finish gives a stone-like appearance.

‘Big Sky’ is in reference to Alberta prairie skies that seem to go on forever and the nickname ‘Big Sky Country’. The wondrous blue conjures dreamy images of bright blue sunny days.

The oval mint coloured platter has a stone-like texture similar to rugged rocky landscape.

The oval-shaped merlot red coloured platter has gold accents adorning the circular tiles in this piece.

These handmade glass platters represent our natural surroundings and are a joy to behold!

Handmade Glass Platters Artist

Michelle Atkinson was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta.  In 2003 she gained a diploma in New Media Production and Design from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.  Since she has become an internationally recognised graphic designer, amassing over 30 awards.  In 2010 on a whim Michelle attended a weekend glass class, it was there that her interest in glass was sparked.

With a desire to explore all possibilities within glass, Michelle set up a dedicated studio space.  Although mostly self-taught, studying method and processes has enabled her to create her visions.  Being able to create muti-layered concepts ensures a greater depth to her work.

Nature and landscapes are the basis of most of Michelles work.  As her experience grows she finds herself bridging methods for fine craft with those for fine art.

Creating everything from mixed media jewellery to cast-glass awards, purposeful home decor to sculpture.   Michelle has taken her practise all over Western Canada, where she has participated in group shows and markets.

In 2019 Michelle was the Home Décor winner of the Made in Alberta Awards.

Michelle is looking forwards to the day when she can become a full-time artist.
