Originally from Gothenburg, Sweden, Renee Kilburn, came to England in 1994.   Accepted to study Ceramic Design at Central Saint Martin’s College of Design and Technology, Renee lived in London.  It was during her second year that Renee’s view of ceramics changed forever.  An opportunity to not only meet but to work with Kate Malone opened Renee’s eyes to the world of wonderful ceramic creations.

With her heightened awareness of the beautiful natural world within which we live, Renee set about her work with a new sense of colour, shape and movement.   Through the years Renee has developed her own unique way of decorating fired clay.  Giving normally brown stoneware a sense of movement, as well as a brilliantly clear and flowing colourful glaze.

Renee chooses to work with Scrava Earthstone ES40 Hand Building Clay.  Allowing the freedom to work with the coiling and slab and sprig technique she has developed, eliminating the fear of cracking and warping.  Moreover, this gives Renee the freedom to be as spontaneous as she feels.

After the bisque firing, a white stoneware glaze is applied, the piece is fired again and then an earthenware glaze is painted on top.  A final firing presents a highly fired body with resulting vibrant flowing colours.

Renee is now settled in Weston-Super-Mare, where she works in her own studio.   It is here that she creates her unique frost-proof work.  As a result, Renee’s delightful pieces can be enjoyed within the home or to enhance a garden area.

Renee’s work has collectors from across the world.
