Dennis Chinaworks was founded in 1993 by Sally Tuffin and Richard Dennis. The company has been commissioned by many museums and galleries including Royal Academy of Arts, Victoria & Albert Museum, British Museum, and National Portrait Gallery.
The finely decorated pieces, such as boxes, vases, bowls and dishes are bought by collectors across the world from selected outlets in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the Cayman Islands
Run from converted Rectory stables in glorious Somerset, England with pieces thrown by makers Buchan Dennis, Theresa Blackmore, Vanessa Thompson and Rory Mcleod.
Wheel turned pots are thrown and spun, and then decorated by a single artist with colour using incising and slip-trailing and then further colour is added using natural oxides and underglazes, before being finished with a clear glaze. The artist’s signature is found on the base, along with the date, piece number and company name.
Dennis Chinaworks designs are quintessentially Sally Tuffin, with her homage to the Arts & Crafts movement and balanced by Buchan’s love of the contemporary.
Sally graduated from the Royal College of Art Fashions School and set up a Foale & Tuffin with Marion Foale, which became one of the leading design houses of the 1960s.
Sally went on to become a partner and design director at Moorcroft Pottery from the late eighties to early nineties.
Richard Dennis OBE runs a publishing house, publishing specialist books and established an antique glass and ceramic business after training at Sotheby’s auctioneers.
