Purple Chairs ‘Alice Contemporary Italian Dining Chair by Cheeky Chairs Upholstered in Josef Frank Under Ekvatorn’

Beautifully imaginative fabric from Austrian designer Josef Frank.

These purple chairs revel in the delights produced by this marvellous material. Banish boring and say hello to colour with these ravishing purple ‘Alice’ chairs.

The fabric design is a classic from 1941 entitled Under Ekvatorn (Under the Equator) and is known to be one of Frank’s most flamboyant.

Finished in Purpleheart eggshell, these purple chairs are only for the brave. Choose these chairs if you want to make a bold statement and leave the pastel hues and magnolia paint behind.

If there is a certain combination of chair style, fabric and finish you particularly like, then you can commission your very own set.

From their workshop in the Weald of Kent, Cheeky Chairs are putting fashion into furniture with their sumptuous range of chairs and bar stools.

Cheeky Chairs like to do things a little bit differently. They’ve banished boring with a delicious kaleidoscope of colour to make your home all the more bright and beautiful.

They are passionate about colour, and have curated a fine collection of chair models which they’ve adorned with some of the most vibrant, designer fabrics possible.

These fabrics have been specially selected from the worlds of fashion and interior design to deliver a completely unique art chair.

All Cheeky Chairs are sustainably produced. Raw chair frames are crafted from carefully sourced ash or beech. The art chairs are individually upholstered using traditional methods and natural materials such as hessian, calico, coir stuffings and pure new wool for a superior level of comfort.

Austrian Josef Frank escaped the Nazis and fled to Sweden where he became an iconic designer. As founder of the Svenskt Tenn, Frank’s designs were exuberant and nature-inspired. With the help of Estrid Ericson he was a prolific designer with 2000 furniture sketches and almost 200 textile prints.

Before coming to Sweden Frank was designing large residential blocks in Vienna, built around large courtyards as there was a massive housing shortage in the city.

In 1925 with architect colleagues Walther Sobotka and Oskar Wlach he set up the Interior Design firm Haus & Garten.

Frank’s fear was that standard interiors would make everything too uniform and he was not a fan of Le Corbusier’s idea of the home as “a machine for living in”.

Josef Frank has a free, artistic style and developed his colourful ideas with homeliness at its core. His interior design style was a ‘no limits’ kind with nature at the forefront. He saw tubular steel and concrete as a threat to humanity. His design philosophy was one that brought people back closer to nature, so that they could breathe and feel free – even indoors.
