Markus Marschmann glass artist, was born in Eggenfelden, Germany, in 1992. He began his glass journey as a scientific glassblower at Glasfachschule Zwiesel, completing three apprenticeships and winning the 2012 title of ‘Best Scientific Glassblower in Germany.’

These three apprenticeships covered both scientific and art glass blowing and gave him a wide perspective on the medium of glass, its capabilities and the fact that the only limitations were imagination.

Markus is an interdisciplinary visual artist, specialising in glass and has been working from his own studio since he was 19 years old. His studio practice ranges from creating glass objects to full-scale glass installations.

His work is enriched by his dedication to extensive multi-media research and experimentation with his extensive array of materials at his disposal. Informed by a background that encompasses scientific glass blowing and hand-blown glass art.

Alongside his glass studio work, Markus leads hot shop and lampwork workshops at Bild-Werk in Frauenau, Bavaria. As a teaching assistant, he has been able to mentor many people at the beginning of their own journeys into glassmaking.

To further inform his interdisciplinary practice, Markus decided to deepen his learning on two closely aligned subjects. In 2021, he began studying Ceramic and Glass Fine Art at the Institut für künstlerische Keramik und Glas der Hochschule Koblenz.

Markus Marschmann Glass Artist Statement

I am interested in many different things and phenomena in the world, but glass itself is a purely inspiring source for me. I follow it, and as a result, my sculpture is created. What is even more interesting is that the sculpture itself can radiate inspiration for the viewer in turn.

It is just a simple organic form, but it can be a compression of enormous complexity. Whether it’s macro- or micro-views, or perhaps scientific and phenomenal, it leads me to individual inspiring discoveries.

My works convey themselves through the material, mastering it requires a lot of practice, craftsmanship, and technical precision. My artistic approach lies in overcoming the challenges of production and transforming them into simplicity, clarity, and finesse.
