Bear First Nations Artist

Alano Edzerza is a key Artist in the Contemporary Northwest Coast Art Movement.  Born in 1981, into the Ganhada (Raven) Clan of the Tahltan Nation in the Stikine District in Northweastern British Columbia.

With his family already artist themselves it was only natural for Alano’s artistic talent to develop.  He was thirteen when he received the first merit, a sculpture award from the Victoria School Board.

Under the guidance of family member and fellow Tahltan artist, Terrence Campbell, Alano started working in Northwest Coast art.   With the desire to learn how to make jewellery, Alano worked with Rock Charlie in Arizona.   Where he learned casting and engraving.  Alona has also worked on glass design.

Alano looks to the Works of Bill Reid, Dempsey Bob, Dale Campbell and Stan Bevan.  He has also had the opportunity to work with artists Jay Simeon, Marcel Russ, Philip Grey, Corey Bulpitt and Rick Adkins.  Alano also studied the Tsimshian formline, which was where his first works were derived from.

Drawing upon his family heritage, Alano seeks to use the religion and symbols found within his ancestry.  His contemporary vision drives him to present his work in many formats.  In multimedia, cravings, furniture, glass and clothing.

Such are his designs that in 2010, Alano was commissioned to design the outerwear for the Dutch Olympic Team.

Alano is now the owner and director of his own gallery, based in West Vancouver, British Columbia.

‘This is the art of a once dying culture. It’s the art that is bringing the culture back alive. This is the reason why I work so hard towards my goal.’
